Puerto Rico

Through a comprehensive background of Puerto Rico’s history, culture, and values, we, as a group, will examine the implications of pre- and modern-day colonial history on the island and investigate alternative methods of supporting the community beyond contemporary and monetary-centered U.S. policies. In partnership with on- and off-campus organizations, we will examine mutual aid practices in rural areas of Puerto Rico, exploring how these collaborative, anti-establishment methods foster community-driven support and resilience in the face of natural disasters. Our focus will include agroecology to understand different land use and ecological concepts, and we will use documentaries, movies, music, articles, book excerpts, and potential guest speakers to gain further context on the current events and ongoing efforts in Puerto Rico.

Tabonuco, offers a variety of experiential and educational programs centered around creative arts, ecological agriculture, alternative construction, sustainable living systems, and more. We explore various systems of coexistence and self-sustenance through alternative construction and sustainable living systems.
