The southern border has become a literal and figurative battleground for migrants from all over the world attempting to cross into the United States to live a “Dignified life.” Migrants risk doing so every day but inevitably feed into the capitalist agenda of the United States. So, it is essential to ask ourselves, is the American Dream real for immigrants and worthy of being called a dignified life? In this DeCal, we will examine the humanitarian crisis at the southern border and how it continuously affects the lives of immigrants and generations beyond, within, and outside the US. To learn about issues at the southern border, we will serve on a critical service learning trip to the southern border over spring break, in person, to work with Border Angels who have dedicated their time to advocate for migrants at the border.

A nonprofit group called Border Angels promotes social justice, human rights, and humane immigration reform. By educating and supporting the communities on both sides of the border, this effort aims to lower the number of fatalities along the US-Mexico border. Programs for education, outreach to day laborers, and reunions of families are among the services offered. immigration assistance to needy migrants and asylum seekers. Through campaigning, education, raising social awareness, and taking direct action to protect the rights of migrants and refugees, Border Angels works to foster a culture of love.
