San Francisco
In conjunction with the course, students will participate in the Alternative Breaks Trip to San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. This provides students the opportunity to learn directly from community partners working with the unhoused population. As we serve alongside these organizations, we will reflect on how our own identities and experiences shape our engagement. Together, this course and trip aim to equip students with the knowledge and understanding necessary to support meaningful advocacy for economic justice in the Bay Area and beyond.

As the growing housing crisis continues to impact the Bay Area, this course examines the city at its epicenter– San Francisco. This DeCal will examine systemic socioeconomic forces that drive displacement and deepen inequality, including the city’s rising cost of living, economic and housing policies, and its severely disproportionate impact on marginalized communities that contribute to the rising rate of “homelessness.” This course will analyze the rich cultural history of community resistance in the Tenderloin and Mission Districts against the city's rapid gentrification, policing efforts, along with more. Ultimately, this DeCal encourages students to think critically, engage empathetically, and humanize the vulnerable communities impacted by San Francisco’s urgent housing crisis.
Our first community partner, St. Anthony's, serves the Tenderloin community through providing a dining hall, hygiene hub, free clothing program for all ages, and more. Their focus began in 1950, focusing on food service, now expanding on many others, celebrating its 75th anniversary recently, highlighting its long commitment to work on the community's revival.

Our second partner, GLIDE, provides similar focuses, with a different approach on harm reduction, HIV reduction, and free meals along with others. From public policy staff to members working on human resources focusing on recruiting full-time staff from the San Francisco communities, from the Mission to Tenderloin district, it continues to serve the SF community through its mobile program in cleaning in the streets to provide a safe place for those in the unhoused community.
